How Forests Shaped History
The basis of the North Country economy has long been logging and the tourism industry. Although seemingly unrelated, the two industries both evolved in the 1800s, and have become strong enough to live independently and coexist well.

Loggers were among the first of the hardy settlers in the region; the inns and taverns that were the precursors of the grand hotels began popping up to serve this growing industry. These days many logging corporations allow fishermen, snowmobilers and hunters to use their land, and instead of clear-cutting acres of wilderness, they have learned to use the land responsibly and utilize it as a renewable resource. The logging industry has continued to evolve, and many regional companies now work with companies throughout the world.

The other industry that built the North Country is tourism. From as far back as the mid-1800s, travelers have made their way to New Hampshire's North Country. The region was popular with some of the great writers of the late 1800s and early 1900s, with notables such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow all frequenting the region. More and more frequently, vacationers have come to the area only to fall in love with the region and relocate their families and businesses to the North Country.

Due to the success of loggers and tourism a third industry has emerged in the North County, the "Entrepreneurial Industry". In many of the communities within Coos County you'll find individuals and companies dealing in these industries "Health Care & Social Assistance", Retail Trade, Accommodations & Food Services, Manufacturing, Arts & Entertainment, Recreation and others. The North County might be right for you. Check it out today.
